There are many opportunities open to you if considering training as a teacher, the area you choose to study will depend on the kind of teacher you eventually want to become. Teachers have the ability to mould young minds, encourage students to make their own choices and become successful. Most people choose to enter the world of teaching because they simply love to teach, enjoy working with children or feel they can have a positive impact on today’s society.
Becoming a teacher has its ups and downs, there is a lot of paperwork involved, the planning and teaching time can be heavy and if you are teaching children you do need to be a good disciplinarian. On the other hand there are lots of advantages too, long holidays, an inspiring job and the satisfaction gained from watching people develop and learn.
If you are still unsure as to what age group you would like to teach then consider volunteering at a summer school for youngsters or foreign students, this should provide some guidance in which areas might interest you the most. Teaching nursery kids can’t be compared to high school children, they can both be difficult but also rewarding in very different ways.
The qualifications you will need to obtain will be different for the age group you want to teach, ensure you undertake research in what is required and the types of positions you can apply for once you pass before making any decisions.
If you want to teach a specialized subject in secondary school, such as I.T. or P.E., you need to study that specific subject to get a job. Each state has different requirements so check with your local authority as to what qualification you need to gain for the area of work you are interested in and if previous experience can gain you credits.
Start of as a teacher’s assistant can often be a good idea if you want to obtain some experience before taking on the study load. You will be able to watch and learn from the actual teacher whilst doing some of the teaching yourself. This can also help to increase your confidence if you are nervous about teaching in front of a class of students. It will also look good on your resume and let any prospective employer see that you are serious about a career in teaching.
There are never enough teachers to fill all the positions available and skills as a teacher are in demand. There are a range of skills involved in being a teacher and you have to be adaptable and quick thinking in order to keep a whole class of students interested. It is essential you know a great detail about the subject you are teaching. If you are teaching elementary or middle school across a wide range of subjects, such as history and geography, it can be hard work to know everything, but it will soon come quite naturally to you even if it involves a little revision yourself the night before.
Enthusiasm and excellent communication-skills are the primary characteristics that a good teacher will have. If you are not interested in the subject, your students will neither. Your aim is to make them want to know more about the subject you are teaching. There are plenty of colleges and universities around the country who can provide the training required to become a teacher.
