Compost is good for the garden and very good for the environment. When cooking pieces end up in landfills, they release methane, which is bad for the environment. When used in the garden, compost adds nutrients to the soil that your plants need to be as healthy as possible. Unfortunately, it probably will not give them everything they need, then you will need to increase your compost with organic fertilizers such as fish emulsion or kelp can be found at your garden store.
Buy or Build a Compost Bin
If you're clever and like to build things, you may want to build your own composter. There are probably some good plans to build a tray of items online. Otherwise, buy a compost bin like the Earth Machine, which is what I will be great work, too. Some cities do offer free compost bins to residents, helping to reduce down the amount of garbage going into landfills. The location you choose for your compost heap may have an impact on the speed of your compost happens. The compost will usually be faster in a more sunny location.
Get your compost!
Once you get your compost bin set up, you can either follow the instructions that come with the trash if you bought one, or start with 4 to 6 inches of "brown" material such as leaves or straw. Then you can begin to incorporate "green matter" in the form of kitchen waste such as egg shells, peelings of fruits and vegetables, rice, pasta, tea bags, coffee grounds, and cuttings of plants inside. Do not put meat, bones or other animal parts in your compost pile. Also, do not put diseased plant material from your backyard in the heap. Each time you add green material to the pile, make sure to add some brown material and give the battery a stir to incorporate the additions into the heap.
Turning the Pile
To ensure your compost is its maximum output, you must turn the pile frequently. How many times you turn your battery depends on how fast you want to produce compost for your garden. Some people turn the pile every 7 to 10 days, while some will run once a month. Understanding what is best for you and plan accordingly. Turning the pile more frequently, get faster results. In addition, if the compost pile is dry, you should add a little water to moisten. If it seems too wet, try to increase ventilation to dry. The earth has a lid with ventilation control that can control the flow of air into the compost bin.
